Issue CXXIII: September 2018

This is the 123rd issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in September 2018 as well as short reports abut events, presentations, etc. in August 2018.

Jenny Yu, who is a PhD student with Anne Cutler at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development in Sydney, Australia, will be visiting the department in the second week of September.

Anastasia Giannakidou (University of Chicago) will be visiting Konstanz from September 19th to 22nd with a Zukunftskolleg Mentorship grant granted to Andreas Trotzke. On September 20th, she will give a talk on "Doxastic and epistemic dimensions of mood choice." More information can be found here.

Supported by the Zukunftskolleg's mentorship programme, Alice Turk (University of Edinburgh) will be visiting the department from September 24th to 28th to work with Tina Bögel.

We say goodybye to Adriana Hanulikova! Her W3 substitution (Phonetics and Neurolinguistics) in Konstanz ends by September 30th. We wish her all the best for the future.

• Jenny Yu and Katharina Zahner will be giving a talk at Interspeech, which takes place in Hyderabad, India, from September 2nd to 6th. The talk is entitled "Compression and Truncation in Australian English and Southern German."

• Alexandra Engel and Adriana Hanulikova will give a talk entitled "Processing of case variation in German prepositional phrases" at the workshp Socially Situated Language Processing (SSLP 2018), Berlin, from September 4th to 5th.

• Adriana Hanulikova will also give a talk entitled "Effects of talker identity on speech comprehension across the lifespan" at SSLP 2018.

• The following members of the department are presenting at EuroSLA, taking place in Münster from September 4th to 8th:
  • Tanja Kupisch is hosting a Language Learning round table discussion entitled "Does input make a difference? Yes! Substantial? It depends …" with Tom Rankin.
• Anika Lloyd-Smith, Marieke Einfeldt & Tanja Kupisch are presenting a talk entitled "Italian-German bilinguals: The effects of HL use on the majority and minority language".
• Anika Lloyd-Smith and Tanja Kupisch are co-authors of a talk entitled "Input Experiences Determine Heritage Speaker Linguistic Outcomes" alongside Fatih Bayram and Jason Rothman.
• Miriam Geiss and Tanja Kupisch will present a paper entitled "Gender cues in L1-Russian children acquiring German as an early L2", co-authored by Marit Westergaard & Natalia Mitrofanova.
• Tanja Kupisch is co-author of a poster entitled "ProSeg: A comparable corpus of spoken L2 French"alongside Elisabeth Delais-Roussaire, Paolo Mairano, Fabian Santiago, and Frida Splendido.

• The following members of the department will present their work at Sinn und Bedeutung 23 (SuB) in Barcelona, Spain, from September 5th to 7th:
  • Maria Biezma gives a talk on "Presupposing questions"
• Regine Eckardt and Gisela Disselkamp give a talk on "Self-addressed questions and indexicality — The case of Korean".
• Felix Frühauf co-presents a poster (with Berry Claus and Manfred Krifka) on “Negation and polarity-ambiguous propositional anaphors”.
• Erlinde Meertens, Sophie Egger and Maribel Romero will present on "The Role of Multiple Accent in Alternative Questions".

• Adriana Hanulikova will present a poster entitled "Effects of talker identity on speech comprehension across the lifespan" at AMLaP2018 in Berlin, from September 6th to 8th.

• George Walkden is giving a talk at the Gersum Project conference in Cambridge, UK, September 7th, on “Scandinavians and verb-second in Northumbrian Old English”.

• Bettina Braun will be giving an invited talk at the workshop "Prosodic variation across languages: The state-of-the-art in comparative prosodic research“, taking place at the University of Leiden, from September 14th to 15th. The workshop is organized by Janet Grijzenhout and colleagues.

• In the same workshop, Katharina Zahner will present a poster on "The processing of pitch accent type and stress in German infants and adults", and a poster on "Compression and truncation in Australian English and Southern German", together with Jenny Yu. Nathalie Czeke will also attend the workshop.

• Theo Marinis together with Federico Faloppa, Tony Capstick, Shirley Reynolds & Doug Saddy (University of Reading) is organising the final conference of the ProLanguage project on September 20th to 21st at the University of Reading, UK. The ProLanguage project is a multiple partner project that addressed how language and language policies in refugee camps, and in facilities outside refugee camps can enhance their physical and mental health, act as social protection, enhance their chances for mobility, and facilitate their integration into the destination society.

• Regine Eckardt will present at the philosophical colloquium at the University of Milano, Italy on September 24th. Her talk addresses wohl as an evidential marker in German.

• Theo Marinis will give the talk "Multiliteracy in action: learning to read in the heritage language supports literacy skills in the majority language" at the Symposium Paradigm shift in language education for the development of multiliterate and plurilingual agencies organised by the European Civil Society Platform for Multilingualism (ECSPM) at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany, from September 26th to 27th.

• Theo Marinis gave the keynote talk on "Multilingualism & Multiliteracy in India" and the knowledge transfer workshop "Experimental Methods in Language Acquisition Research", at the 10th Malaysia International Conference on Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Melacca, Malaysia, from August 14th to 16th.

• Mark-Matthias Zymla gave a talk with the title "Annotation of the Syntax/Semantics interface as a Bridge between Deep Linguistic Parsing and TimeML" at the ISA-14, The 14th Joint ACL – ISO Workshop on Interoperable Semantic Annotation in Santa Fe, USA, on August 25th.

• George Walkden organized a workshop on “English as a syntactic outlier” at the 20th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (ICEHL XX), from August 29th to 30th, with Ian Roberts (Cambridge).

• James Griffiths and Marcel Den Dikken will present their joint paper on "Ellipsis and Spec-Head agreement" at the workshop "The timing of ellipsis" at the conference Societas Linguistica Europaea in Tallinn, Estonia, which takes place between August 29th and September 1st.

• Monika Lindauer gave a talk about "Eliciting German grammatical and prosodic features in bilingual children" at the Language and Cognition Group at the University of Leiden on August 28th and a talk about "The acquisition of German by bilingual children: Language exposure, grammatical and prosodic development" at the workshop Perspectives on heritage languages and minority languages: Language contact, maintenance and change on August 31st at the University of Leiden, Netherlands.

Carmen Widera will be a visiting researcher at the Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal from September 3rd until December 21st.

Georg Kaiser is invited to give a talk at the Sommer School 2018 of the Deutsche Romanistenverband. The Sommer School will take place in Munich from September 4th to 7th under the topic “Romanistische Linguistik im Zeitalter der Digital Humanities: generative und kognitive Theorien”. Georg Kaiser will give a talk on "Syntaktische Variation und generative Theorie" and will furthermore participate at a panel discussion.

New Project in Konstanz:
We are happy to announce that the coordination of the Horizon2020 ITN programme The MultiLingual Mind (MultiMind) has been transferred to the University of Konstanz. MultiMind is an international, multidisciplinary and multisectorial training network on multilingualism. It consists of a consortium if 10 Universities (University of Konstanz, University of Reading, University Milano Bicocca, University of Tübingen, University Pompeu Fabra, University of Leiden, Jagiellonian University, University of Geneva, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Universiti Putra Malaysia) and 2 non-academic organisations (Associazione la nostra familia ‘Instituto scientifico Eugenio Medea’, CPIA1 Palermo) along with 17 partner organisations that will train 15 Early Stage Researchers on multilingualism. MultiMind is coordinated by Theo Marinis.
