We are a small group of researchers at the University of
Konstanz in Germany, working on an automatic large-scale grammar of Urdu
using the XLE platform and the theoretical framework of
Lexical
Functional Grammar.
The Urdu group is part of a larger project of grammars developed
by a loose alliance of researchers (ParGram). Within this group, Urdu is still one
of the smaller grammars, but since March 1st, 2009, we are funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), which
allows us to work seriously on our grammar and get
closer to our goal to
build a large-scale, robust grammar for Urdu and also Hindi.
The Urdu grammar is of great interest
for the ParGram community because it is the only South Asian
language within this project and there are some challenges, which
are unknown to other languages.
We created a wikipage for the Urdu grammar in order to record our
progress. There, anybody can find information to current
and former topics that the Urdu grammar group is working on and
follow the discussions that evolve around issues like the transliterator.
