It is known that V1.V2 hiatus is disallowed in many languages. When V1 is non-high, hiatus may be resolved by glottalization or /ɹ/ insertion. However, it is not well understood why adult speakers choose one over the other. Much less is known on children’s development of such strategy. Results from two studies revealed that both adults and children inserted /ɹ/ in connected speech, but the two groups differed in how glottalization or /ɹ/ is distributed. These results will be discussed in terms of the construction of prosodic structure during planning in adults and its development in children.
