The exact categorization of the meanings conveyed by degree exclamatives (1) has been a matter of debate, particularly concerning two main aspects: factivity (2) and high degree (3).

(1)       How tall Mary is!

(2)       Mary is tall.

(3)       Mary is tall beyond expectation.

Whereas (2) is usually taken for granted as a presupposition, the high degree meaning (3) has been argued to be either a a presupposition or a conventional implicature. In this talk I will present the results of three experiments aimed at testing the behavior the two meanings of exclamatives under denial and projection, which give us new evidence for establishing which meanings are asserted (“at-issue”) and which are backgrounded in Spanish degree exclamatives.
