This is the 120th issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in June 2018 as well as short reports abut events, presentations, etc. in May 2018.


Visiting Konstanz

Sakine Çabuk (Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey, from June 4th to 8th), Xavier Villalba (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Spain, from June 11th to 15th) and Heike Speitz (University College of Southeast Norway, Norway, from June 16th to 22th) will visit our department as part of the Erasmus+ Teaching Staff Mobility Program this month. Events at/by the Department

in June

The research unit "Questions at the interfaces" (FOR2111) will be hosting a Workshop on Meaning in non-canonical Questions (MiQ). The event will take place from June 7th to 9th at Hedicke's Terracota (downtown Konstanz). A number of members from our department will also present their work. The program can be found on the conference website.

The 34th South Asian Languages Analysis Roundtable (SALA-34) is going to be held at our department from June 19th to 21st. Additionally, a one-day workshop on the prosody of South Asian languages will be organized before the main conference on June 18th. More information on both events is available on the SALA34 website.

Members of the Baby Speech Lab will participate in the "Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft" on June 23th. Bettina Braun, Nathalie Czeke and Katharina Zahner will give a talk on early language acquisition (talk entitled „Sprechen lernen beginnt mit dem Zuhören - schon vor der Geburt“ (17:00-17:30 in room A704)). Janet Grijzenhout, Monika Lindauer and Talina Weber will talk about later acquisition processes in production (talk entitled „Von den ersten Wörtern zu komplexen Sätzen“ (18:00-18:30 in room A704)). Everybody is welcome!

On June 26th at 17:00 in G 307, Barbara Meisterernst will be giving a talk on Chinese syntax and semantics (precise title to be confirmed).

From June 27th to 29th the department will be hosting the fifth annual workshop on the Semantics of African, Asian and Austronesian Languages (TripleA 5). It is being organized by Ryan Bochnak, Miriam Butt, Erlinde Meertens and Mark Zymla. Further information can be found on the conference website.   • Ryan Bochnak will be presenting a colloquium talk at the University of Oslo on June 1st. The title is "Looking into the future."
  • The following members of our department will present their work at the 9th Speech Prosody in Poznań, Poland, from June 13th to 16th:
    • Nicole Dehé, Bettina Braun and Daniela Wochner will present their work on "The prosody of rhetorical vs. information-seeking questions in Icelandic".
    • Farhat Jabeen and Bettina Braun are presenting a poster with the title "Production and perception of prosodic cues for narrow and corrective focus in Urdu/Hindi".
    • Daniela Wochner and Nicole Dehé are presenting a poster entitled "Prosody meets pragmatics: a production study on German verb-first sentences".
  • Tanja Rinker, Ramona Baumgartner, Frank Fuchshuber and Janet Grijzenhout will present a talk on "The role of parental input across linguistic domains in multilingual children in the school entry phase" at the Child Language Symposium (CLS2018) at the University of Reading, UK, from June 25th to 26th.
  • Carmen Widera is giving a talk with the title "L’usage du pronom explétif il en français moderne – une enquête expérimentale" ('The use of the expletive pronoun il in modern French - an experimental study') at the annual conference of the Association for French Language Studies AFLS2018 that will take place at the Université de Toulouse, France, from June 27th to 29th .

  • Laura Dörre was invited to give a talk on "Partikeln und ihre unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen — Korpuslinguistische und psycholinguistische Untersuchungen" at the Linguistisches Forschungskolloquium, Institut für Germanistik, University of Hamburg on May 2nd.
  • Carmen Widera and Georg Kaiser gave a talk with the title "Astérix e os pronomes sujeitos – uma análise contrastiva do emprego dos pronomes sujeitos no português europeu e brasileiro" ('Asterix and the subject pronouns - a contrastive analysis of the use of subject pronouns in European and Brasilian Portuguese') at the Congresso Internacional em Variação Linguística nas Línguas Românicas that took place from May 2nd to 4th at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal.
  • Theo Marinis was one of the keynote speakers at the 1st Emirates Speech Language Pathology Conference in Abu Dhabi (May 4th to 5th) and presented two talks on "Language processing in children with Specific Language Impairment/Development Language Disorder" and "Language impairment in multilingual children".
  • The following members of the department presented their work at at the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC 2018), from May 7th to 12th in Miyajaki, Japan:
    • Bettina Braun and Katharina Zahner gave a presentation on the "Distribution and prosodic realization of German verb forms in infant-directed speech".
    • Aikaterini-Lida Kalouli, Katharina Kaiser, Annette Hautli-Janisz, Georg Kaiser and Miriam Butt presented a poster on "A Multilingual Approach for Question Classification".
    • Aikaterini-Lida Kalouli, Livy Real and Valeria de Paiva gave a presentation on "WordNet for 'Easy' Textual Inferences" at the Globalex Workshop.
  • George Walkden gave an invited talk with the title “Proto-Indo-European: a language without Merge?” at CamCos 7 on 12th May.
  • James Griffiths and Güliz Güneş (University of Leiden) gave a talk entitled "An Indo-European Complementiser as a coordinator in Turkish: clausal versus subclausal appositions" at the workshop on Clause Typing and the Syntax-to-Discourse Relation in Head-Final Languages, which took place at the Schloss Freudental from May 15th to 17th (organized by Josef Bayer and Yvonne Viesel).
  • Andrea Beltrama presented a poster on "Emphatic 'just' and 'simply'. Exploring metalinguistic exclusives" at SALT 38, from May 18th to 20th at MIT, USA.
  • On May 22nd, Miriam Butt and Tina Bögel gave a talk on Urdu questions and the prosody-syntax interface at the The Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics at the University of Tromsø.
  • Bettina Braun gave an invited talk at PAIK (Phonological Association in Kansai), entitled "The phonology and phonetics of rhetorical and information-seeking questions" on May 26th.
  • Eva Csipak was invited to give a talk at the SynSem group at the University of Oslo on May 30th, titled "V3 clauses in Standard German".


Travelling

Natasha Korotkova is co-teaching the class "An opinionated guide to predicates of personal taste" at NASSLLI, which will take place from June 23rd to 29th at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
